| |
The Enter the Firing Room project is a website funded through the Human Exploration and Development of Space, or HEDS, enterprise. This website targets middle school students to encourage them to take higher science and math classes and pursue careers at NASA and in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in general.
It highlights the System Engineers in the KSC launch firing rooms. The students are given information through both video and text. This information encompasses the processing of the shuttle for launch, list of links to obtain detail information on the systems featured, and most important, a chance to meet the actual engineers through text "biographies" and individual videos of the engineers explaining what they do. The website also provides pages to provide information on how to join the NASA team, fun NASA trivia, and a page specifically for educators. After the students have experienced the entire site, they can test their knowledge by completing a simulation which will periodically ask them multiple choice questions. If they are successfull at answering all the questions during the simulated countdown, they will view a video of an actual launch.
This website also contains videos from two of our astronauts, James Reilly and Janice Voss. James Reilly's video focuses on the importance of the KSC launch team. Janice Voss explains how she reached her dream by participating in the Co-op program, becoming a NASA engineer, eventually being accepted into the astronaut corps, and flying aboard the shuttle. KSC has been awarded continued funding on this project and will be enhancing and expanding the capabilities of this site.
