| | | | | Kennedy Launch Academy Simulation System (KLASS) Software
| |
Bring a launch countdown into your classroom! Would your students like to serve as console engineers for a launch countdown? Now they can! Based on the actual software currently used for training at the Launch Control Center, this software enables a launch countdown simulation with a networked system of computers. Materials are created by teachers for teachers, with alignment to national standards. There are five console stations for your student engineers: Main Engines, External Tank, BioMed (or OBS), Weather, and Environmental Control. While this is targeted at middle school, it is very easily scaled up to the high school level. This software is an interactive, inquiry based method for your students to practice the materials they learn in the classroom. It also answers the age old question "When will I ever use this stuff I'm learning in the classroom?"

The software is free and will soon be available by download or on CD. If you would like to assist with beta-testing the software, please email the contact listed below. One basic requirement is the need for one computer that is Linux based, which can be networked with the student computers. The Linux machine will be the teacher console, with other computers (Windows based) serving as student computers. Very detailed installation information will be provided to those who request a copy of the software. The software and materials are easily scaled up or down anywhere from a one-day session to a one year curriculum!
Background materials that you can use in your classroom are available right now, which you can use with or without the KLASS software. Many new exciting changes will be available this year. KLASS will soon be able to run from a Windows environment, without the need for a Linux based computer. The background materials and class curriculum is being updated and enhanced. New features, such as quizzes in a game show format, are being created. Materials that can be used independently are being created, with enough material to cover a full year. All materials are created to support the National Science Education Standards, as well as the National Educational Technology Standards developed by the International Society for Technology in Education.
KLASS Demo at National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) 2009 conference
NASA's Kennedy Space Center has been invited to present this software at the 2009 NSTA conference in New Orleans, LA, March 19-22, 2009. This will be a hands on session. Come join us for the fun! If you can't be there, just request the KLASS software and materials from the point of contact below.
How to obtain our Software
- The KLASS software and background material is freely available to all. It is expected to be available for release to the general public in late 2008.
- For a website with information on the real engineers who work in the Launch Control Center, take a look at: http://enterfiringroom.ksc.nasa.gov.
- To request a copy of the beta release of the software and associated materials, so that you may assist with beta testing, please email the contact below.
